Presidential candidate of the New Patriotic Party, Dr. Mahamudu Bawumia, has reinforced his position against the LGBTQI+ community in Ghana.

At a campaign event, he promised LGBTQI+ will not be allowed to thrive in Ghana. “We have all heard about what is going on about the LGBTQI+, about men marrying men and women marrying women. That will never happen under the Bawumia presidency. We will not allow it.”

According to Dr. Bawumia, neither the Bible, Quran, the values and culture of Ghana allows the practice of homosexuality.

“It (LGBTQI+) is not in the Bible, Quran, the values and culture of the country are against it. No matter the cost we will stand firm. We will never compromise on that matter (LGBTQI+),” he added.

Thousands of demonstrators on Tuesday, October 8, took to the streets to protest the prolonged delay in the approval of the anti-gay bill.

The protest, led by proponents of the Sexual Rights and Family Values Bill, commonly referred to as the anti-gay bill, witnessed a diverse group of participants, including activists, community leaders, and concerned citizens, all united in their call for swift legislative action.

The protest aims to push for the president’s immediate assent to the bill, which has been awaiting action since Parliament passed it on February 28.
