Popular Ghanaian radio presenter, Nana Romeo, has publicly apologized following intense backlash over remarks he made regarding a fatal accident in East Legon that claimed the lives of three people, including two young women. The tragic accident, which occurred on October 12, 2024, involved the son of Bishop Salifu Amoako, who was reportedly behind the wheel at the time of the crash.
The victims, Justine Agbenu and Maame Dwomoh, along with a third unidentified individual, lost their lives in the devastating collision, leaving their families and the community in deep mourning. During an appearance on UTV’s United Showbiz program on October 19, 2024, Nana Romeo shared his views on the incident, referencing his Islamic beliefs to explain how life and death are perceived in his faith.
In his comments, the Accra FM presenter stated that since Allah is believed to be the giver and taker of life, the manner in which someone dies is not something that can be easily questioned. However, these remarks were quickly met with public outrage, as many found his comments to be insensitive in the context of the grief-stricken families.
Responding to the criticism, Nana Romeo has since expressed regret over his choice of words, acknowledging that his remarks may have appeared unsympathetic. In his apology, he clarified that he did not intend to trivialize the tragic loss of life or minimize the pain of the bereaved families.
“I understand how my comments may have come across as insensitive, and for that, I deeply apologize. I did not mean to add to the sorrow of the families affected by this terrible accident,” he said.
Nana Romeo emphasized that his comments were based on his understanding of death from a religious perspective, but he recognized that it was not the appropriate time or context to express such views, especially while families are grieving. He also expressed his condolences to the families of the victims and stressed that he too was saddened by the tragic event.
