The protester in a black nose mask with black glasses and a helmet noted that kidney diseases are becoming more common, likely due to the contamination of food from galamsey water.

Speaking to JoyNews the protester said, “ I had a 3 month old baby he died of kidney failure, we went to Lekman, they directed us to Korle Bu, they took us to the pediatrics, a doctor called Yeboah diagnosed everything and took him in a machine, later I was sent to get medicine I returned and I saw the pressing my son, they informed me my son had a kidney failure”.

Day 2 of the Concerned Citizens Anti-Galamsey protest has kicked off with hundreds of demonstrators marching from Okponglo to Parliament House, demanding action against illegal mining.

The demonstration, which will run until October 5, aims to highlight the ongoing environmental destruction caused by illegal mining, locally known as galamsey.

The protesters are also demanding the immediate release of 53 Democracy Hub protesters who were arrested and still in remand during an anti-galamsey demo some weeks ago.
