Chief Executive Officer (CEO) of Electrochem Ghana Limited, Abdul Razak Adam, says Ghanaian salt mining companies can produce salt to meet the country’s demand.

According to him, Ghana does not need to import any sort, hereby appealing to government to place a ban on the importation of salt.

With Electrochem alone producing some two million metric tons of salt per year as compared to the country’s annual consumption of approximately 750,000 metric tons, he argues this ban will protect the country’s local salt industry.

“We should not be importing salt when we have it in abundance here,” he said, revealing that Electrochem currently has over 30,000 metric tons of salt stockpiled while imports continue.

Just as Nigeria has implemented protective measures for local businesses, including a ban on rice and furniture imports, the Electrochem CEO appealed to government to put in place similar mechanisms to protect local businesses.
