Simon Osei Mensah attributed the congestion in the Kumasi business district to the construction of the Kejetia Central market.

Speaking in an interview with Angel FM, the minister stated, “the problem at the central business area is what they call Kejetia Dubai, it is a nice edifice on the outside but internally rubbish. The problems we have, the congestion in the Central business district area is because of this one (Kejetia Market)”.

The minister additionally added that phase I of the construction failed to allocate an alternative to the existing lorry terminal, which is being transformed into the central market area, thereby causing significant congestion in the area.

He said, “Kejetia was a lorry terminal to serve central market, Kejetia wasn’t a market. After creating the market where did they create the alternative terminal? their own documents states 1000 commercial vehicles use Kejetia, but they created 108, from 2015 900 have been stranded wont they eat?”.

Simon Osei detailed that there are over 8000 stalls at Kejetia, “if 5 percent owes a car where are they going to park, a market where buyers can go, and buy is it a market? buyers also come in with their car where are they going to park”. He questioned.

However, he blamed the COVID-19 and debt restructuring for the NPP government failure to complete phase II of the project, which would have addressed the congestion problems.
