Ghanaian actor, Big Akwes has disclosed that royalties received by actor and actresses have drastically declined under the President Akufo-Addo era.
According to him, the Audiovisual Rights Society of Ghana (ARSOG), the sole licensed collective management organization responsible for licensing, collecting, and equitably distributing royalties and levies due to audiovisual content producers, authors, and performers, used to pay him a minimum of ghc5,000 in 2015 during former President John Dramani Mahama’s tenure.
Sharing details into a close door meeting between industry players and John Dramani Mahama, he clarified that no one in the meeting asked candidate Mahama for a house.
“No one said they wanted houses or homes. It was Kweku Manu who raised that the money ARSOG gives to us, since Akufo-Addo and his government came to power, I for instance ASORG pays me Ghc23. I used to get at least Ghc5000 in 2015 during Mahama’s era. Now I get Ghc23 from ASORG and Kwaku Manu said they shouldn’t give us that money anymore, but rather build homes for the movie people with that money. It was a suggestion he (Kwaku Manu) made,” he added.
