Professor Ransford Gyampo, a Political Science lecturer at the University of Ghana, has expressed deep regret over his decision to support President Akufo-Addo in the 2020 elections.

He recalled driving from Accra to his hometown just to vote for Akufo-Addo, only to now question the President’s democratic integrity.

“I drove from here to my hometown to go and vote for you President Akufo-Addo. You can’t tolerate descent? What sort of government are you?”

Gyampo criticized the President’s intolerance to dissent, comparing him unfavorably to former President Jerry John Rawlings, who, despite being a military leader, was more open to opposing views.

He also accused Akufo-Addo of attempting to weaken labor unions to prevent collective actions against government policies.

A night to the commencement of the action, Organised Labour called off the strike with leadership of two of the unions reading an already prepared statement at the meeting which was held to arrive at a decision.

But the University Teachers Association of Ghana (UTAG) dissented from the decision and embarked on the strike following a vote that was held at all the public university campuses where they represent.
