I don’t jail people in Ghana – Akufo-Addo speaks on arrested anti-Galamsey protesters

President Akufo-Addo has broken his silence on the recent protest against galamsey and the arrest of anti-galamsey protesters.

During an interview with France 24 President Akufo-Addo stated, “I’m not responsible for jailing people in Ghana. The courts in Ghana are independent institutions, and they have been all through this period of the Fourth Republic.”

President Akufo-Addo noted that people who misconduct themselves and are brought before court it is for the court to deal with and has nothing to do with politics or the Executive.

He further stated he has no problem with protest saying, “How can a President who himself political career was aided by leading protest have problem with protest, I don’t have a problem with protest, and nothing is done in Ghana to prevent people form airing their views on anything”.

Meanwhile, a three-day anti-galamsey protest just ended last night on 5 October 2024 with a vigil. The final day of the protest calling for the end of galamsey and the release of some 53 democracy hub protesters arrested two weeks ago.
