Following the recent passing of Akua Donkor, flagbearer of the Ghana Freedom Party (GFP), questions have arisen over whether her death could affect the ballot placements of other presidential candidates in the 2024 Ghanaian election. Many Ghanaians, especially social media users, speculate on the possibility of last-minute changes, especially given the strong symbolism and branding associated with ballot positions for campaigns.
However, the Electoral Commission (EC) has stated that Donkor’s passing will not impact the ballot arrangement, as the printing of ballots is already underway. Changing any candidate’s position at this stage would lead to significant logistical challenges and added expenses, which the EC aims to avoid. Consequently, all candidates, including former President John Mahama, will retain their current ballot positions.
The speculations were also fueled by recent statements made by Bernard Antwi Boasiako (Chairman Wontumi), the NPP’s Ashanti Regional Chairman, who previously claimed he would move John Mahama from his No. 8 position as a show of influence. Despite these claims, the EC’s clarification makes it clear that no changes will occur in light of Akua Donkor’s passing.
