Gov’t deploys 100 soldiers to Eastern Region to battle galamsey

The government of Ghana has dispatched one hundred (100) armed military personnel to fight illegal mining (galamsey).

The military personnel have been deployed to target galamsey activities at some key water bodies in the country.

The operation which will begin in the Eastern region is going to be the first of many such efforts of government to curb the mena of illegal mining.

Over the past few months, Ghana has witnessed a series of demonstrations calling on government to take immediate action on the galamsey menace destroying the nation’s water bodies and forests.

Not long after, President Akufo-Addo issued a number of directives, including placing a ban on mining in water bodies and forest reserves to show his commitment to end the menace.

The government has deployed 100 armed military personnel to target illegal mining at key water bodies, following pressure from over 50 CSOs. While calls for a state of emergency persist, the operation is set to begin in the Eastern Region, per Citi News sources.… pic.twitter.com/TY5vzkFWI9
