Gov’t  Increases CPD allowance for pre-tertiary teachers

The Ministry of Education has announced a significant increase in the continuous professional development (CPD) allowance for pre-tertiary school teachers across the country.

Professional teachers will see their CPD allowance doubled, from GHC1, 200 to GHC2, 400, by 100% while non-professional teachers will benefit from a 50% rise, with their allowance increasing from GHC800 to GHC1, 200.

This increment comes after the pre-tertiary Teacher Unions which is made up of The Ghana National Association of Teachers (GNAT), the National Association of Graduate Teachers (NAGRAT), and the Coalition of Concerned Teachers Ghana (CCT-Ghana) threatened to demonstrate against the Ministry of Education, Ghana Education Service over salary disparities over government on September 16 failed to fulfill its promises of improved conditions of service

outlined in a collective agreement signed four months ago ,over 12 months unpaid tier deductions to the scheme, delay in rural area allowance discussions, government’s heightened level of aloofness and disregard for roles regarding the agreement, Disparities in salary level and points for GES staff on Deputy Directors amongst others.

A statement released by Spokesperson of the Education Ministry, Kwasi Kwarteng, confirmed that payments for the revised allowances had already been disbursed. The statement described the move as part öf a broader strategy to enhance the skills and knowledge of teachers.

“These enhancements reflect the government’s commitment to supporting teachers in pursuing professional development and skill upgrades, ensuring they are equipped with modern skills and knowledge to deliver effective teaching,” the statement read.

The CPD allowance, introduced in 2020, is intended to provide financial: support for both professional and non-professional teachers to undertake training, acquire new teaching methodologies, and enhance their skills.

It forms part of the government’s efforts to improve the quality of education by fostering continuous learning among educators.
