Illegal mining popularly known as ‘galamsey’ has emerged as a prevailing trend in Ghana marked by environmental destruction, depletion of land and water resources, health hazards for miners and substantial social and economic consequences.
There are different types of galamsey and each has it’s significant environmental, health and socio-economic impacts contributing to challenges in affected communities some of these are: Surface mining, river dredging, underground mining also known as ‘Ghetto’, alluvial mining and chemical mining.
The most dangerous amongst them is the underground mining also known as ‘Ghetto’ mining where the miners dig tunnels to reach deeper minerals.
It’s considered the most dangerous due to the risk of the tunnel collapses and landslides.
Some miners go as far as getting stuck deep in the pits and dying in there until they are later found by other miners.
