Director of Elections and IT for the opposition National Democratic Congress (NDC), Dr. Edward Omane Boamah, has launched a scathing critique of the Electoral Commission (EC), labeling it a “leaking sink.”

Speaking to the media after an Inter-Party Advisory Committee (IPAC) with the Electoral Commission, Dr. Omane Boamah pointed to what he perceives as a lack of transparency and accountability within the EC.

He highlighted that the chairperson spent over 75% of her concluding remarks focused on trust, yet the commission has failed to adequately address critical questions.

“The 35 questions we asked regarding the stolen BVR kits have gone unanswered,” he stated,

He further illustrated his frustrations by comparing the EC’s performance to that of a poorly performing student.

“If you have a child who goes to school and makes arithmetic errors at a master’s level, how can we trust their results?” Dr. Omane Boamah recalled the mistakes made during the 2020 election results declaration, noting the subsequent corrections as a source of distrust.

He criticized the EC’s handling of anomalies, asserting that merely justifying errors after the fact does not instill confidence. “When your roof is leaking, you don’t just keep on mopping,” he argued.

According to him both the electoral and IT systems of the EC are fundamentally flawed, urging for a comprehensive overhaul to restore public trust in Ghana’s electoral process.

Meanwhile , EC Chairperson Jean Mensa urged her colleagues to refrain from undermining the commission’s work, stating that the EC is committed to presenting accurate data for the upcoming elections.
