Death toll increases in Bawku chieftaincy dispute

Two brothers were killed yesterday (Sunday, 27th October, 2024) on their way to their father’s funeral in Bawku, while several others sustained various degrees of injuries.

These casualties follow the resurrection of tensions in the Bawku chieftaincy disputes.

The events unfolded not long after chief Alhaji Seidu Abagre, one of the people laying claim to the Bawku chieftaincy title returned to Bawku after the Kumasi High Court revoked his arrest warrant on October 17, 2024.

Reports from the region indicate that since the outbreak of shooting on Saturday (26 October), the death toll has risen to approximately 15, with 20 others sustaining various degrees of injury.

Some individuals have had to be transferred to the Tamale Teaching Hospital to receive treatment.

Security forces are struggling to contain the situation.
