Tamale Central, the stronghold of NDC stalwart Haruna Iddrisu, was brought to life as thousands of people turned out for a health walk in support of Vice President Dr. Mahamudu Bawumia, the New Patriotic Party’s (NPP) presidential candidate. The unprecedented crowd, estimated to be in the tens of thousands, marked a significant moment in Bawumia’s growing political influence, particularly in a constituency long dominated by the opposition.

The overwhelming turnout, which was largely made up of young people, is being seen as a clear indication of Dr. Bawumia’s rising popularity and momentum in the Northern Region. Political analysts from the region have noted that this massive show of support reflects a shift in the political landscape of Tamale Central, a constituency traditionally led by NDC heavyweight Haruna Iddrisu.

Since emerging as a key political figure, Dr. Bawumia has steadily chipped away at the NDC’s dominance in the north. His influence has not only closed the presidential margin in the region but has also given the NPP control of 16 out of 31 parliamentary seats across the Savannah, North East, and Northern regions combined—areas that used to be part of a single Northern Region.

In the newly created Northern Region, which includes Tamale Central and other Tamale constituencies, the NPP now matches the NDC seat for seat, holding 9 seats each. Bawumia’s strong ties to the region, coupled with the numerous development projects he has championed, have significantly bolstered his support, reducing the presidential vote gap to a near 50-50 split.

As the Vice President transitions from running mate to the main presidential candidate, many predict that the political dynamics will tilt further in his favor. The health walk in Tamale Central, a symbolic event in Haruna Iddrisu’s backyard, signals that Bawumia’s influence is poised to challenge even the most entrenched NDC figures.

At the end of the walk, top NPP officials urged the crowd to continue supporting Dr. Bawumia, emphasizing his trustworthiness, vision, and ability to lead Ghana into a brighter future. The event not only demonstrated Bawumia’s growing appeal but also sent a strong message that Tamale Central is no longer an uncontested NDC stronghold.
