Asantehene, Otumfuo Osei Tutu II, has urged the government to create a national policy to support the activities of private tertiary educational institutions in contributing to the nation’s development.
During the 50th Anniversary Celebration of the Christian Service University (CSU) in Kumasi, he emphasized the need for a specific national policy relevant to private tertiary educational institutions.
Deputized by the Asafohene, Asafo Boakye Agyeman Bonsu, at the event, he stated that the absence of such a policy seems to adversely affect the future of private universities.
Otumfuo highlighted declining student intake, financial constraints, and challenges in attracting qualified staff due to low salaries as potential negative effects of the lack of a policy.
He urged the government to engage in dialogue with private tertiary institutions to formulate a policy that would facilitate the growth of private universities.
‘’the government allocate admission quotas to public universities to alleviate congestion in their lecture halls and release the rest to the private universities’’.
The Asante Monarch also called for annual grants to be provided to chartered private universities for specific projects, particularly in the training of lecturers.
He said that by doing this, private universities would be able to collaborate with public universities in revitalizing the human resources base for national development.
