Attorney General Godfred Dame has expressed grave concerns about the increasing drumbeats of violence, incitement to unrest, and civil disobedience as the country prepares for presidential and parliamentary elections on December 7, 2024.

He stated that approach this critical phase in the nation’s democratic journey, it is crucial for the Judiciary to ensure that justice is administered based solely on the law, rather than on emotions, popular opinion, or public sentiment.

‘’The Judiciary must remain steadfast, resisting any influences outside of legal considerations, including social commentary’’.

Speaking at the Annual Conference of the Association of Magistrates and Judges of Ghana (AMJG) on Wednesday, Mr Dame lamented the troubling cycle of violence that is once again emerging.

‘’Regrettably, we are witnessing a troubling cycle once again. The drumbeats of violence and chaos have escalated, creating an atmosphere of tension and fear.

There are alarming attempts to stir unrest ahead of the elections, with demonstrations that sometimes serve as a guise for attacking our security forces and disrupting essential public services’’.

Such conduct, he asserted, has no place in a democracy.

In any advanced democracy, when protestors exceed the boundaries of free expression and endanger the safety of their communities and themselves, they are held accountable under the law, he stated.
