A devastating road accident on the Kumasi-Obuasi Highway has left 13 people dead, including a child, in the early hours of Monday, October 14, 2024. The accident occurred when a VIP bus traveling from Kumasi to Enchi lost control and plunged into a ditch near Kwapia, a town close to Obuasi.

According to police reports, the deceased include seven men, five women, and a child. Most of the victims died at the scene, with only one survivor initially making it to the hospital before succumbing to their injuries. The bus driver, Osei Adu, was also rushed to a hospital but unfortunately passed away shortly after.

Eyewitnesses revealed that the bus was carrying more passengers than usual, having picked up several stranded individuals from a broken-down vehicle along the route. This overloading, combined with a reported argument among passengers about the situation, is believed to have distracted the driver and led to the tragic accident.

Those injured in the accident are receiving medical care, while an official investigation has been launched to determine the exact circumstances leading to the crash. The bodies of the deceased have been transferred to a local morgue as the authorities continue to gather information and support affected families.

This tragedy highlights ongoing concerns about road safety in Ghana, especially regarding vehicle overloading and driver fatigue on long-distance routes.
