African Union High Representative for Silencing the Guns, Dr. Mohamed Ibn Chambas

Respected diplomatic and African Union High Representative for Silencing the Guns, Dr. Mohamed Ibn Chambas, has charged President Akufo-Addo to focus on ensuring a peaceful and violence-free election in 2024.

Dr Chambas was speaking at the inaugural Diplomatic Honours event in Accra, when reflected on the unfortunate loss of lives during the 2020 general elections the Akufo-Addo-led administration has done absolutely nothing about.

According to Dr Chambas, the violence marks as a blemish on Ghana’s long-standing reputation for peaceful elections

He emphasized the importance of making the 2024 elections part of President Akufo-Addo’s legacy by preventing any violence and ensuring no bloodshed occurs. Dr. Chambas highlighted the significance of collaboration among all stakeholders, including political leaders and security agencies, to safeguard Ghana’s image as a stable democracy on the continent.

Dr. Chambas also underscored the importance of the security agencies exercising restraint, stressing that lethal weapons should not be used during the polls and that fairness and professionalism must guide their actions. He called for accountability, warning that anyone involved in electoral violence, whether individuals or security personnel, would be held responsible.
