A large tract of maize farms has been destroyed by illegal miners in a viral video on X, after allegedly purchasing the land from a farmer.

In the footage, young men identified as galamseyers are seen cutting down maize, stating, “We want gold money for business. What can maize do in this economy? How much is maize worth?”
This destruction has sparked discussions online about the ongoing drought in the country.

On August 24, 2024, the Ministry of Food and Agriculture (MoFA) admitted that Ghana is currently facing a drought, acknowledging that the ministry was unprepared for the severity of the situation impacting northern Ghana.

The Mankrom Cocoa Cooperative Farmers Association has reported that over 100,000 acres of cocoa farms have been devastated by illegal mining activities. Farmers are expressing their concerns about the severe impact on cocoa-growing regions, where farmlands are being ravaged in the pursuit of gold.

“They are destroying cocoa farms and land for illegal mining, and we have not heard anything from the government.

The Cocoa Board is telling farmers they cannot take action due to the extent of the damage and the influential figures involved in gold mining,” the farmers lamented.

Ghanaians now questions how government is going to solve the drought crisis the country is facing, as farm lands are being destroyed by galamseyers.
