In a viral video, illegal mining known as galamsey hotspots situated just a few meters from the Konongo-Accra highway are seen hoarded with aluminium sheets, giving the appearance of a typical construction site.

From afar, the site looks like any other building project.

The illusion is so convincing that it easily deceives passersby. However, beneath this façade, illegal mining activities continue unabated.

This tactic of hoarding mining sites with aluminium sheets has become increasingly common, allowing miners to operate undisturbed while presenting an outward appearance of legality.

Residents of Konongo are deeply concerned, not just about the environmental destruction but also the long-term health risks associated with the ongoing mining.
