Member of Parliament for Walewale, Lariba Abudu has announced her withdrawal from the New Patriotic Party (NPP) primaries in her constituency.
This comes in the wake of the scandalous conduct of voters in the primaries contest between herself and Dr. Kabiru Mahama.
A man identified as Kamara Bawah allegedly grabbed and destroyed several ballot papers before being apprehended by police. The EC subsequently nullified the election results after reviewing the damaged ballots.
In a press release, Lariba Abudu stated her withdrawal was “in the interest of the greater good of the New Patriotic Party (NPP).” The party’s National Executive Committee had scheduled a meeting for September 11, 2024, to address the situation and find a resolution that is expected to unify the party in Walewale.
The NPP General Secretary, Justin Kodua Frimpong had previously assured that the meeting would result in a decision aimed at resolving issues and ensuring the party retains its seat in Walewale.
Police have detained Kamara Bawah for causing damage to the ballot papers while security measures have been reinforced in Walewale and surrounding areas to maintain order. Nonetheless the opposition parties continue to raise concerns over the conduct of the NPP ahead of the December polls.
