Dr. Benjamin Otchere-Ankrah, a lecturer at Central University, has expressed his shock and sentiments over the news of 39 people aspiring to contest as presidential candidates in the coming December elections.

The Electoral Commission made the nomination forms available on its website for both presidential and parliamentary aspirants on August 2nd 2024 and information later gathered by Yawanews.com indicates that as of September 4th 2024, 39 aspirants, consisting of 12 registered political parties and 27 individuals had picked up codes from the EC to download the presidential forms.

Otchere-Ankrah, in an interview monitored by Yawa News, suggested that these people advice themselves better on this decision. “They need to advice themselves because they know that this plan of theirs will not succeed. Some of them are only using this as a business strategy so they just want to be among the numbers and feed off of being talked about”, he said.

According to him, some of these people genuinely have good plans and visions for the country, however, “Being a president is not a business of selling ‘koko’ and it is not a game. They need to relax. People wake up from bed one day and randomly decide they want to be president but it doesm’t work that way”. Otchere hammered that every field of work requires education and training to be able to successfully excel and it is no different with presidency.

“I can’t wake up one day and decide to be a radio presenter when I don’t even know how to operate the console”, he divulged.

He concluded by urging the Electoral Commission to enforce the laws regarding picking presidential forms and the selection process, expressing that 39 applicants for the position of president is nothing short of absurd.
