Seasoned Ghanaian actress, singer and television personality, Maame Dokono, personally known as Grace Omaboe, has described politics as an institution with too many complications.

She made this statement in response to why she quit politics after setting the record as the first and only Ghanaian female celebrity to contest for positions both under the ticket of the National Democratic Congress (NDC) and the New Patriotic Party (NPP).

“With politics, there are so many complications in it. If I wanted to live my life and live long, it meant I had to leave politics. Even my children asked me to stop”, she told Abeiku Santana during an interview on Okay FM.

Further speaking on why she did not win the position, Maame Dokono explained, “I first contested under the ticket of the NDC as MP for Oda. I did not win because I did not register on time. It was about six to nine months to election when I tried”.

The actress however emphasized that despite her late entry, the difference in votes between her and her opposition was very little, hence, she probably could have won if she had tried earlier or contested again later in the future. Instead, she later contested under the ticket of the NPP but was met with even worse luck, as she did not make it through the primaries.

Maame Dokono recently published a book titled ‘Unforgettable Maame Dokono’, which she hints is a great read for both young and old, and that her life story and legacy can be used in Ghanaian societies as a yardstick for raising younger generations. Her book was launched on Saturday, the 7th of September, 2024 at East Legon, at an exclusive, invitation-only event, which also happened to be her 80th birthday celebration.
