Ghanaian musician and songwriter Kwame Nsiah-Apau, popularly known as Okyeame Kwame, has called on President Nana Akufo-Addo to take decisive action in addressing the country’s ongoing illegal mining, known as ‘galamsey’.

According to him, the president holds the executive power to bring an immediate halt to the activities destroying Ghana’s natural resources.

“If he asks everyone involved in galamsey to stop immediately whether legal or illegal for us to constitute another group including chiefs, technical officials, engineers and others for proper stakeholder mapping, it will happen” he said on an interview on UTV’s United Showbiz show.

Referencing a philosophy he said “anyone enthused over power will watch his nation burn down and he will lead over the ashes”.

He called for a shift away from political affiliations, urging Ghanaians to unite and prioritize the country’s natural resources, specifically air and water, over party politics.

“Our water supply being destroyed should have nothing to do with politics. All these politicians and political parties have proven to be liars; they don’t love the country. It’s just a Political Investment Recuperation Program (PIRP). So, let’s put aside our political differences, whether NPP or NDC, and come together out of love for the nation,” he said.

The rap doctor emphasized that despite the need for collective action, the ultimate responsibility falls on the president.

He called on Akufo-Addo to use his executive power to end the crisis immediately, allowing time for a comprehensive and strategic plan to be developed.
