As calls for a ban on illegal mining continue to grow, a group of young adults took to the streets to campaign against the practice.

They held placards along the GIMPA-Dzorwulu road with inscriptions such as, “Galamsey is suicidal. It kills everything around and beyond” and “#StopGalamseyNow – Galamsey is fast money for a few, but death for everyone.”

This peaceful protest follows the recent three-day protest by the Democracy Hub, which led to the arrest and detention of 46 protesters for causing damage to public property.

Speaking on their decision to stage the street campaign, one of the protesters explained that they wanted to raise awareness about the devastating effects of illegal mining on water bodies.

They highlighted the illnesses and water shortages in areas affected by galamsey activities.
