The King of the Ashanti Kingdom, Otumfuo Osei Tutu II, has dismissed suggestions that the Manhyia Palace is politically aligned following the nomination of his nephew, Dr. Matthew Opoku Prempeh, as the Vice-Presidential Candidate for the New Patriotic Party (NPP).

In a meeting with the National Democratic Congress (NDC) Vice-Presidential Candidate, Prof. Jane Naana Opoku-Agyemang, Otumfuo clarified that his family ties to Dr. Opoku Prempeh do not indicate support for any political party.

“Although Dr. Matthew Opoku Prempeh is my nephew, it does not mean the Manhyia Palace is backing either the NPP or NDC,” the Asantehene said during the visit. He reiterated that the Palace remains neutral and that individuals within the Palace are free to support any party of their choosing.

Otumfuo’s comments came after he had offered guidance to Dr. Opoku Prempeh upon his nomination, advising him on the importance of loyalty and leadership. However, he stressed that this advice was not an endorsement of the NPP.

Prof. Opoku-Agyemang, during her courtesy call, expressed her gratitude to the Asantehene for his consistent counsel to all political parties, including the NDC.

“We are thankful for your warm reception and appreciate the advice you have offered the NDC over the years,” she said.

Prof. Opoku-Agyemang was joined by regional party executives and other supporters during her visit to the Manhyia Palace.
