President Nana Addo Dankwa Akufo-Addo says John Dramani Mahama, the leader of the opposition party NDC, is the brain and fuel behind the widespread allegations that his family, his government and himself are corrupt.
According to the president, this is a politically-motivated effort by the opposition party, aimed at tarnishing his name and that of his family and government as revenge for unveiling the corruption that was going on during the NDC’s tenure, and for further encouraging legal action against them.
“I am aware that there is a deliberate, politically motivated effort to portray my government, my family, and myself as corrupt. The leader of the opposition, the perennial NDC presidential candidate, continues to describe me as a ‘clearing agent”, he said during his address at the Annual Ghana Bar Association (GBA) Conference in Kumasi earlier today.
Nana Addo added that he is fully against corruption and vowed never to jeopardize due processes in the fight against corruption. “It is important that I reiterate that I will not, under any circumstance, abandon the course of due process in the fight against corruption. Be that as it may, in any event, I will leave it to the judgment of the Ghanaian public to decide whether it is preferable to be a ‘clearing agent’ or a government official one,” he emphasized.
President Akufo-Addo further re-echoed his government’s interventions and initiatives that are in place to help fight corruption and bring perpetrators of the act to book. He reported, “We have established mechanisms to ensure that those who abuse their power are held accountable. In the international arena, we have sought to uphold the rule of law and champion democratic values. Ghana’s voice has been strong in defending international law and human rights and advocating for democracy on the global stage”.
The NDC, led by former president John Dramani Mahama, has made several accusations of the NPP being involved in corruption, especially as election period draws closer, with the most recent postulation being that the Nana Addo and Bawumia government are attempting to cover up corruption and criminality in the SML matter.
