Recent polls conducted by Global InfoAnalytics, presents a significant lead for John Mahama, the National Democratic Congress (NDC) flagbearer ahead of the 2024 general elections.
The survey, which covered all 16 regions of Ghana, shows Mahama commanding 53% of the vote, while his main rival, Dr. Mahamudu Bawumia of the ruling New Patriotic Party (NPP), trails at 31.6%.
Other contenders in the race include Leader of the new Force Movement, Nana Kwame Bediako popularly known as Cheddar, with 2.3% support, and Alan Kyerematen of the Great Alliance Party, garnering 1.1%. Notably, 11.2% of voters remain undecided, leaving room for potential shifts in the political landscape.
The poll also reveals deep-seated dissatisfaction with the current state of affairs in Ghana. A staggering 73% of respondents believe the country is headed in the wrong direction, while only 20% express optimism about its current trajectory.
President Nana Akufo-Addo’s administration faces significant disapproval, with 63% of voters expressing dissatisfaction with his performance.
Economic concerns appear to be a driving factor in voter sentiment. The survey indicates that 55% of respondents feel their standard of living has worsened over the past year, while only 20% report improvements. Corruption remains a pressing issue, with 60% of voters believing it has worsened.
The poll also sheds light on the factors influencing voter decisions. Past performance of political parties ranks highest at 54%, closely followed by current economic conditions at 53%. Candidate credibility (39%), party manifestos (20%), and other reasons (18%) also play significant roles in shaping voter preferences.
Meanwhile, the ruling NPP party is optimistic about retaining power with Dr. Bawamia as flagbearer despite losing goodwill and trust from the majority of Ghanaians after two terms in power.
