Member of the New Patriotic Party’s (NPP) Communication Team, Kwesi Botchwey, has described the opposition National Democratic Congress’ (NDC) call for a forensic audit of the voter’s register as unwarranted and needless.

According to him, calls from the NDC is “totally senseless.”

“The request of the NDC is totally unwarranted. It is needless and makes no sense. It is totally senseless. I am saying this because they met with the EC and said they had seen some discrepancies in the register and the EC needs to rectify it. The EC asked them to present the errors they have found for corrections to be made but they are effusing it,” he delivered in a submission on UTV.

He went back in time to 2020 where prior to the elections Asiedu Nketia claimed the EC Chairperson had been appointed to rig the elections on behalf of the NPP. The NDC then sent the EC to court after the declaration of election results, “but when the NDC was asked to present the results and data, but Asiedu Nketiah said he had no data to present.”

The Opposition National Democratic Congress (NDC) has been consistent in its stance that a forensic audit of the voter register is unnecessary, instead advocating for the use of established processes to verify the register’s accuracy.

This position was reiterated by Johnson Asiedu Nketiah, then party’s General Secretary, in 2015, when he presented a position paper on the integrity of Ghana’s 2012 Biometric Voters’ Register.

However, recent developments have led to a shift in the NDC’s demands.

The party is now calling for an independent audit of the voter register, citing alleged irregularities and concerns over the integrity of the Electoral Commission’s (EC) setup.

This demand has been met with resistance from the EC, which has rejected the NDC’s call for a forensic audit.
