President of the University Teachers Association of Ghana (UTAG) at the Kwame Nkrumah University of Science and Technology (KNUST), Prof Eric Abavare, has criticized flagbearer of the National Democratic Congress (NDC), John Mahama for his comments on galamsey.

Citing the former president’s promise during the 2020 election campaign to pardon all individuals imprisoned for illegal mining under the Nana Addo Dankwa Akufo-Addo administration if he returns to power, the educationist shared his displeasure at the statement, describing Mahama’s previous administration as lacking of decisive action in the fight against galamsey.

According to Professor Abavare, former president Mahama should not have mounted a defense for illegal miners, to him the statement disqualifies Mahama from leading Ghana as its president again.

“He doesn’t even qualify to be the president of Ghana.

This issue of galamsey, we know the solution, we know those involved, we know what we can do to solve it. The issue is that we don’t want to do it,” he lamented in an interview with Joy News.
With the current state of water and environmental pollution in Ghana as a result of galamsey, numerous civil society groups, professional bodies, traditional authorities and individuals have called for a banned on the menace.

On the other front, the political parties as usual are playing politics with the fight, pointing fingers at whose administration has supervised the most illegal mining, when they should have been focused on finding collaborative means in curbing the canker.
