The Katanga fraternity of the Kwame Nkrumah University of Science and Technology (KNUST) on Friday announced plans to embark on a naked demonstration in Accra over the pollution of river bodies by activities of illegal mining known as galamsey, which has wreaked havoc on Ghana’s environment.

In a statement, signed by its general secretary Emmanuel Afutu Kotey ,Katanga Fellowood expressed regret over its inability to participate in the demonstration, explaining that the decision followed extensive consultations led by the highest King of their land, Odeefour, who called for a boycott of the event.

“Out of profound respect for our Lord, we humbly withdraw from the collective demonstration and urge all disappointed Fellows to remain steadfast and heed the call of Odeefour,” the statement read.

However, the Fellowood reaffirmed its commitment to the cause by donating 10,000 cedis, raised through mobile money contributions, to assist with the logistics of the protest.

The group expressed gratitude to supporters who contributed, emphasising their shared commitment to safeguarding Ghana’s natural resources and addressing the effects of galamsey.

“We may not join the demonstration in the collective manner originally planned, but we stand firm in our resolve to continue the fight against the ills of society,” the statement added.
