Investigative journalist and author, Manasseh Azure Awuni, has questioned the democracy of Ghana.

In a video he posted on X, captured by Citifm, he revealed how the police wrongfully arrested innocent bystanders who were not protesting at the 37 Military Hospital area in Accra.

These individuals were apprehended by police officers despite not engaging in any protest or illegal activity.

“Murder is a bailable offence in Ghana. Yet, these people were arrested for standing peacefully and denied bail. The judiciary and the police must be ashamed of this” he said.

Manasseh’s video exposes the truth behind the arrests, refuting previous assumptions that the detained citizens were caught in confrontations with the police during the protest.

“It’s shameful that since 2017, our civic space has shrunk and continues to shrink under a president who made a name for himself protesting against military regimes and in the Rawlings era of the Fourth Republic when they claimed he wasn’t democratic enough” he emphasized.

Manasseh noted that although the president is boasting of Ghana’s democratic credentials on global platforms like the UN General Assembly, the reality on the ground tells a different story.

He believes that the arrests symbolizes the erosion of democratic rights and is calling for the immediate release of the detainees under the hashtags #FreeTheCitizens and #StopGalamseyNow, amplifying public demand for accountability and justice.
