Dr. Clement Apaak, Deputy Ranking Member of Parliament’s Education Committee, has stated that Ghanaians will not re-elect the governing New Patriotic Party (NPP) to continue with their practice of renaming public institutions.

This statement comes after Dr. Mathew Opoku-Prempeh, the NPP’s Vice Presidential candidate, reaffirmed the party’s intention to rename the University of Professional Studies, Accra (UPSA) as ‘Opoku-Ampomah University of Professional Studies’.

This idea, initially proposed by President Akufo-Addo in 2018, was part of the recognition of Nana Opoku-Ampomah’s contributions to education in the country, for which he was awarded an honorary doctorate during the UPSA’s Fourth Special Congregation.

During a campaign visit to Nana Opoku-Ampomah, who is the Chief of Amoafo in the Bekwai Constituency, Dr. Opoku-Prempeh assured the chief that the name change was still in progress, with the necessary legal and constitutional steps being taken to implement it.

In response, Dr. Apaak in a post on X criticized the NPP’s decision, labeling it as a ‘shameless’ practice.

“Your shameless stock in trade is to rename public institutions. How many have you secured funding for and built from scratch in your eight years in office. News flash, Ghanaians will not give you a mandate to continue on your shameless remaining spree”.

He questioned the NPP’s record of establishing and funding new institutions during their time in office, accusing them of relying on renaming existing public institutions instead of building new ones.

Dr. Apaak emphasized that Ghanaians would not support the continuation of this trend in the upcoming elections.
