On Friday, Israel’s military announced that it had conducted targeted airstrikes on Hezbollah’s headquarters in Beirut, reportedly killing Hassan Nasrallah, the leader of Hezbollah, along with several other commanders.

Israel has clarified that it is not at war with Lebanon but with the militant group Hezbollah, aiming to completely de-weaponize it. The airstrikes marked Israel’s heaviest assault on Beirut in nearly a year, targeting buildings in a southern suburb in an apparent attempt to eliminate Nasrallah, a key ally of Iran.

Witnesses reported hearing six loud explosions throughout the Lebanese capital on Friday afternoon, with large plumes of smoke visible from as far away as Batroun, a city an hour’s drive from Beirut.

In the predominantly Shia neighborhood of Haret Hreik, several apartment blocks were reduced to rubble. Footage from the scene showed massive slabs of concrete piled with twisted metal and wreckage, while craters were evident, one of which had swallowed a car.

The Lebanese health ministry reported six fatalities and 91 injuries, though early estimates suggest the death toll could rise to 300 as rescue workers continue to clear the debris. Videos of the strikes indicated the use of ground-penetrating munitions known as bunker busters, with some footage capturing vertical jets of flame as bombs detonated underground.

Israeli media identified Nasrallah as the primary target and stated that the military was verifying whether he had been hit. However, other reports from Hezbollah sources claimed he was “alive and well.”

The strikes followed a bellicose speech by Israeli Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu at the UN General Assembly, where he declared that Israel’s campaign against Hezbollah would persist despite international calls for a three-week ceasefire.
