This demand comes in response to the worsening effects of illegal mining activities, commonly known as galamsey, which continue to devastate the environment and livelihoods across the country.

Reacting to the calls, the minister in an interview on Joy FM’s Newsnight said, “I have heard other groups say that the president should be impeached and so and so forth. In a democracy, with the greatest of respect, people are entitled to express views and so on and so forth. I don’t find the need for that,” he stated.

The minister further indicated that Ghana is a democratic nation, hence everyone in the country is entitled to their own set of opinions, reiterating there is no need for him to step down.

Abu Jinapor was quick to add that the government has done well in the fight against illegal mining, and appealed to all stakeholders to band together to collectively win the fight against galamsey.
