Visas of some Ghanaian students studying in the UK have been revoked due to financial debts to the schools they are studying in.

The students who are studying in the University of Birmingham received notices from the UK Home Office alerting them of deportation if these fees are not settled by November 9, 2024.

Most of the students who received these notices are beneficiaries of the Government of Ghana Scholarship Scheme but because the government has delayed in making funds available to pay their fees, these students face an abrupt end of their education and deportation.

A letter from the UK Visa and Immigration Office sent to the affected students outlined their limited options: either leave the country voluntarily or face legal consequences, including possible detention and prosecution. The students now face the threat of deportation if no resolution is found soon.

Portions of the notice read; “You now have until 09 November 2024 to either leave the United Kingdom (UK) or make another application to stay here. You do not have a right of appeal or administrative review against the decision to cancel your permission.

If you leave or are already outside the Common Travel Area (the UK, the Channel Islands, the Isle of Man, and the Republic of Ireland) before 9 November 2024, your permission will end immediately, and you will have to make a new application to re-enter the UK.”
