President Akufo-Addo has been exposed of sweet talking the UN General Assembly about food security in Ghana while hunger has strike Northern Ghana.
On September 25, 2024, President Nana Addo Dankwa Akufo-Addo stated at the 79th session of the United Nations General Assembly that his government initiative of Planting for Food and Jobs has knowingly boosted food security and stimulated economic growth in Ghana.
He said, “We have also taken significant steps to boost food security and economic growth through the programme planting for food and jobs.”
However, facts available has however revealed these claims made by Akufo-Addo at the UN General Assembly to be false. The data shows the Akufo-Addo Bawumia government has not boosted food security despite their planting for Jobs initiatives with Ghana ranking 83rd on the Global Food security Index in 2022.
According to GSS data economic growth peaked in 2017 reaching 8.1% but has since fluctuated to 0.4% in 2020.
Northern Ghana is now facing severe hunger with a severe drought that has generated general concerns about food security and the livelihood of thousands of farmers.
Farm crops such as rice, maize, groundnuts, and millet are all in a ruin due to the lack of rainfall.
The prolonged drought has led to a sharp drop in food production, raising alarms about a potential food shortage and a looming famine.
President Akufo-Addo sweet-talked the UN general assembly knowing perfectly about the situation in Northern Ghana with his government allocating 8 billion Ghana cedis to provide relief and some mitigative measures to farmers.
