According to the Minority members of the Education Committee of Parliament, the government owes in excess of £17 million in tuition fees to 927 Ghanaian students on scholarship in the UK, spanning 2years and 3 months.

The failure on the part of government to settle the debt of these students has resulted in some of these UK universities withdrawing the admission of affected students.

“According to the students, the government owes their fees in excess of £17 million. This has not been paid. Consequently, a number of them have been withdrawn by their schools,” Deputy Ranking Member on the Education Committee of Parliament, Dr. Clement Apaak disclosed.

“Some are not being allowed to take classes in person. Some are being processed for deportation and others are under threat of being arrested and prosecuted.

So this is a very dire situation, which is leading to some students engaging in very despicable and humiliating activities just to survive. We have information to the effect that some of the male students have had to resort to selling their sperm. Some of the female students are engaged in prostitution.”

Dr. Apaak appealed to government to promptly settle the debt to avoid further embarrassment to the nation.

Reports reaching Ghana indicate some of these students have resorted to selling sperms and some engaging in sexual activities to earn money to support themselves and their education because of government failure to meet their financial obligations.
