The Electoral Commission (EC) of Ghana has destroyed defective and surplus ballot papers from the Ahafo and Volta Regions ahead of the 2024 general elections.
A video circulating on social media shows taskforce officers offloading the surplus ballot papers in a bush area, with the materials confirmed to have serialisation errors.
The recall was officially announced on November 15, and the papers were destroyed by burning on Saturday, November 16, under strict supervision to ensure transparency and maintain the integrity of the electoral process.
The destruction process was overseen by several stakeholders, including political party agents, representatives from the National Intelligence Bureau (NIB), National Security, the Ghana Police Service, and the Electoral Commission itself.
Samuel Tettey, the EC’s Deputy Chairman of Operations, reassured the public that any additional defective ballot papers would be identified and destroyed accordingly.
The EC reiterated its commitment to safeguarding the integrity of the election and ensuring that all materials used in the process are properly accounted for.
