A recent UNICEF survey has raised serious concerns about the safety of children online in Ghana.
The study found that 20% of children aged 9 to 17 have received inappropriate sexual messages, while 50% have encountered sexual images.
Additionally, 40% of children reported feeling unsafe online.
In response, UNICEF developed a training manual on Online Child Sexual Exploitation and Abuse in 2017, aimed at better preparing police officers to tackle online exploitation.
The organization has trained facilitators in various police schools across the country, with a recent workshop in Kumasi emphasizing the urgent need to address online child protection.
Mr. Eric Kwaku Mensah, Project Lead for Online Child Exploitation, highlighted the importance of incorporating cyber-hygiene practices into school curricula to safeguard children from online threats.
This initiative is part of a broader effort to ensure law enforcement is equipped to handle digital safety concerns and foster a safer internet environment for Ghana’s youth.
