Assin Central Member of Parliament (MP) Kennedy Agyapong has called on the media to be circumspect in their reportage, urging them to exercise caution in how they cover the ongoing issues in Parliament.
Speaking to the media, Agyapong expressed growing concern over the current state of affairs within the legislative body, warning that the escalating political tensions could have severe consequences for the future of Ghana.
Agyapong’s comments Follows Bagbin’s decision to adjourn the House on Thursday, November 7, due to a lack of business—caused by the absence of New Patriotic Party (NPP) members
Afenyo-Markin expressed his dissatisfaction with the sequence of events that led to the adjournment.
“I’ve advised my colleagues from the other side that if you win the upcoming election, will you be able to sit in Parliament and make decisions? And they all said no,” Agyapong said. He explained that he had raised this question with opposition MPs to highlight the potential consequences of their actions.
He further warned that the current political stances, some of which are based on precedents like that set by Professor Aaron Michael Oquaye, former Speaker of Parliament,, could undermine the integrity of Parliament and the country’s governance.
Agyapong urged the opposition to reflect on what would happen if they were to win the next election but were unable to function in Parliament due to ongoing political tensions.
“If you’re saying that Professor Michael Quinn set a precedent, and you’re using that to take a political position, what happens if you win and cannot sit in Parliament? Will the NPP help you govern this country?” he asked, warning of a potential breakdown in political cooperation that could be disastrous for the nation.
