Over 1,000 members of the Pre-Tertiary Teacher Unions in Greater Accra are expected to take to the streets of Accra tomorrow, October 1, 2024, to protest against the Ministry of Education and the government for their failure to fulfill the Collective Bargaining Agreements (CBA) signed on May 31, 2024.
This agreement was established between the unions and the government, represented by the Fair Wages and Salary Commission and other stakeholders.
The participating unions include the Ghana National Association of Teachers (GNAT), the National Association of Graduate Teachers (NAGRAT), and the Coalition of Concerned Teachers (CCT).
They have expressed deep dissatisfaction with the government’s negotiating approach on issues such as deprived area allowances and adjustments to continuous professional development allowances.
The demonstration will begin at Kwame Nkrumah Circle (Obra Spot) and proceed to the Ministry of Education. Despite repeated appeals for action, the government has exhibited a concerning level of indifference to key aspects of the agreement, worsening the hardships faced by teachers across the country.
This neglect not only undermines the integrity of the bargaining process but also significantly impacts the morale and welfare of educators.
On May 6, 2024, Peter Boateng, the Regional Secretary of GNAT, highlighted escalating tensions within the labor sector during a press conference, urging the government to take prompt action to avoid disruptions.
He stated, “If the government is negotiating with the IMF for the second tranche, what we need as teacher unions is for the government to prioritize the demands of our members.
While the government has its priorities, we also have ours, and we hope they will heed and approve what our leadership has been demanding.”
