About ten protesters are currently standing trial at the Accra Circuit Court for the destruction of public property during the #StopGalamseyNow demonstration organized by the Democracy Hub.
The individuals on trial include Raphael Afful Williams, Razak Suleman, Gerald Delim, Abubakar Sadeeq, Bilal Mohammed, Ebenezer Ankomah Okyere, Norgbedzi Kelvin, Priscilla Toboli, Mohammed King Hassan, and Tanko Nabong.
Approximately 46 protesters were arrested for unlawful picketing at the 37 roundabout during the three-day demonstration, which aimed to raise concerns over the government’s handling of the economic crisis and the illegal mining issue threatening Ghana’s water supply.
According to a statement from the Ghana Police Service, the protesters were allegedly engaging in lawless conduct, including dismantling police barricades and obstructing traffic.
In response to the arrests, Selikem Donkor, Esq., a lawyer for the Democracy Hub, that the legal team has been unable to ascertain the whereabouts of the arrested protesters, making it challenging to provide necessary assistance. He is calling for clarity regarding the situation of those detained.
